Deuteronomy 25:3 (NKJV) Forty blows he may give him and no more, lest he should exceed this and beat him with many blows above these, and your brother be humiliated in your sight.
You may have been taught that Jesus received thirty-nine lashes when He was flogged. This was based on a theory that had to do with Jewish law. The truth is He had to receive at least forty-one.
The verse at the top is a command of God for the Jewish people. It was the Romans who did the flogging so the law did not apply. None of this is coincidental. Because Jesus received more than forty lashes, according to our verse at the top this means He was humiliated in the sight of the people. When Jesus received the lashes, He also took on our humiliations.
If you have ever suffered from any kind of humiliation---this is good news. The Bible says in Isaiah 61:7, "Instead of your shame you shall have double honor." When you receive honor, you will become secure in your relationship with God. Honor can also make you attractive to the unsaved, so the benefits are twofold.
Ask God to bless you with honor and continually thank Him for taking your humility to the cross! You will see it manifest and take your relationship with Jesus to new levels.
